GROUP CLASS I: MEET, OVERVIEW AND QUESTIONS A chance for us all to meet, a chance for students to ask any questions about the repertoire, the tech, the materials and the schedule for the weekend. Tim will present an overiew of the weekend’s material, with an emphasis on exercises and songs that the students will learn and take home after the weekend. 


Friday, May 29

GROUP CLASS II: THE THREE BASIC TRIAD SHAPES A review of notes, scales, keys, chords, arpeggios and the terminology we’ll use to describe them all. Practice with the three basic triad shapes in major and minor.

12:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. PDT

OFFICE HOURS Private office hours with Tim scheduled throughout the day.

4:00 p.m. PDT

GROUP CLASS III: I-IV-V PROGRESSIONS USING THE THREE BASIC SHAPES Students will learn to play This Land is Your Land in three major keys and Minor Swing in three minor keys using the three combinations of the three basic triad shapes.

Saturday, May 30

11:00 a.m. PDT

GROUP CLASS IV: ADDING 7THS TO BASIC TRIAD SHAPES All of our 7 and 6 chords are created from the three basic triad shapes. We’ll learn the two ways to turn a basic triad shape into a dominant 7th chord, and practice three of them by playing the blues in G and other familiar songs.

GROUP CLASS V: ADVANCED THEORY USING BASIC SHAPES and Q&A SESSION Tim will present some more advanced chord progressions using the 7th shapes, as well as demonstrating “extensions” we can add to 7th chords. A chance for student questions and discussion as well.

6:00 p.m. PDT

TIM CONNELL LIVE IN CONCERT Tim will perform a diverse set of solo mandolin arrangements and songs. He’ll use lots of basic triad shapes in the evening’s performance : )
